ABOUT LENEHAN'S PUBLIC HOUSE
Its a refreshing experience to walk into Lenehan’s pub at the corner of Barrack St. and Castlecomer road. As one enters one steps back in time. The bar is adorned with old drink advertisements, hurling memorabilia, mirrors and wooden kegs with the names of favourite tipples like rum, whiskey and brandy. There is mellow lit snug and front bar which was originally a grocery shop are separated from the main bar by swinging doors where the typical spice drawers and shelves are still evident and the glass cabinet exhibits rare and interesting artefacts.
.
The pub was built in 1755 before the famine and evidence of this date was found on an old chimney upstairs. Papers dating back to 1880 were found in the loft. The cellars are divided unto 3 sections and at one time housed a kitchen. Originally the pub grounds had stables and cattle were also kept. I was told that at that time milk was “sold loose” to customers behind the bar.
Lenehans changed hands in 2019 but the new owners Michael and Helen Devane did not change the name…Lenehans is a landmark in Kilkenny and the popular well liked family left a wonderful legacy behind…rather than changes…we like to think we added to this lovely establishment with the addition of the yard area during covid times…says Helen…’the old and the new marry seamlessly and compliment each other if anything’
